Sattenapalli: An elderly supporter of YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) died after being run over by a vehicle in the convoy of party chief and former Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy.
The deceased, identified as 65-year-old Cheeli Singaiah, hailed from Vengalayapalem village. He had reportedly come to greet Jagan Mohan Reddy and offer floral tributes on Wednesday, during the leader’s return from Rentapalla village.
According to a Times of India report, Singaiah slipped and fell in front of Jagan’s vehicle while trying to shower flowers, and was accidentally crushed under its front wheel.
According to the Indian Express, Guntur Superintendent of Police Satish Kumar had initially stated that the victim was run over by an unidentified vehicle.
However, later visuals that surfaced on social media showed him being directly run over by the SUV in which Reddy was travelling.
Jagan Mohan Reddy, who was reportedly unaware of the incident, continued with his rally. The incident occurred during his return from Rentapalla, where he had visited the family of a former sarpanch who had recently died by suicide, allegedly due to police harassment.
According to reports, despite police having permitted only three vehicles and a crowd of up to 100 people, a large number of supporters gathered and followed Reddy’s convoy, making crowd control difficult.
