Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani was seriously injured in a car accident in New Hampshire on Saturday night and is currently hospitalized with multiple injuries.
The 81-year-old sustained a fractured vertebra, as well as cuts and bruises on his left arm and lower leg, after his rental car was struck from behind at high speed.
Giuliani is expected to remain in a Manchester-area hospital for two to three days, with doctors advising him to wear a brace for his fractured vertebra. His business partner, Maria Ryan, a nurse practitioner, is assisting in overseeing his care.
Who is Rudy Giuliani?
Rudy Giuliani, 81, is best known as the former mayor of New York City, earning the nickname “America’s Mayor” for his leadership during the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center in 2001. First elected mayor in 1993, Giuliani served two terms until 2001.
Before that, he built a reputation in the 1980s and 1990s as a prominent New York City prosecutor and later ran unsuccessfully for president in 2008.
Giuliani became a close adviser and personal lawyer to President Donald Trump , joining Trump’s legal team during the 2016 campaign and remaining involved through the 2020 election.
Following Trump’s defeat, he promoted baseless claims of election fraud and faced multiple legal challenges, including a $148 million defamation judgment against him from two former Georgia election workers, Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss.
In January 2025, Giuliani reached a settlement that allowed him to keep his home and most valuable possessions. With a net worth estimated at $10 million, including his real estate holdings, Freeman and Moss were unlikely to recoup the full $150 million they had won from him.
Despite his legal and financial troubles, Giuliani continues to receive support from Trump. On August 22, Trump described him as “the greatest mayor in the history of New York” while announcing that Andrew Giuliani would serve as Executive Director of the White House Task Force for the FIFA World Cup 2026.
Earlier in June, Trump also appointed Rudy Giuliani to an advisory council inside the Department of Homeland Security.
