NEW DELHI: A day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the decision to conduct caste census, Congress pulled out skeletons from the closet, posting videos of statements and essays by the Bharatiya Janata Party supremo and UP CM Yogi Adityanath opposing the idea.

Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh shared two video clips of PM Modi, in which he can be heard criticizing the opposition’s push for a caste census and calling it an "urban Naxal idea".

"In the time between the Pahalgam terror attack and the launch of Operation Sindoor, on 30 April 2025, the Modi government suddenly and unexpectedly announced a caste census. Yesterday, at a meeting of chief ministers of NDA-ruled states, the Prime Minister, as expected, took full credit for it," Ramesh said on X.

"But just listen to what the Prime Minister had said earlier- On 2 October 2023, when the caste-based survey report of Bihar was made public. On 28 April 2024, when he was asked a question by the Congress party regarding the demand for caste census," he added.

In another post, Ramesh took on UP CM sharing a video in which he is heard accusing the opposition of trying to create divisions in society along caste lines. Additionally, he also talked about an essay on Yogi Adityanath's website, which, Ramesh said, went against the idea of Constitution of India. The essay is visible on his website.

"The Prime Minister had called caste census an urban Naxal idea. Now just think what Mr. Ajay Singh Bisht, who is eager to take over Modi's chair after @ 75, thinks about caste census? Just listen to his old harsh statements against reservation for Scheduled Castes, Tribes and Backward Classes," he said.

At a conclave of NDA chief ministers and deputy chief ministers on Sunday, PM Modi emphasized that a caste census is a step toward integrating the marginalised into the mainstream of development. He asserted that his government does not engage in caste-based politics but is committed to empowering those who have been left behind. During the meeting, a resolutions was also adopted endorsing the decision to include caste enumeration in the upcoming census.

Last month, the Centre announced that the upcoming population census will include caste-based data, marking the first time such details will be collected since independence.
