NEW DELHI: The ministry of external affairs (MEA) on Thursday confirmed that the death sentence of Kerala nurse Nimisha Priya in Yemen, originally scheduled for July 16, 2025, has been postponed. The Indian government said it is providing all possible assistance to the family amid ongoing efforts to resolve the case.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, during a press briefing, said, “The government of India has been offering all possible assistance. We have provided legal assistance and appointed a lawyer to assist the family. We have also arranged regular consular visits and been in constant touch with the local authorities and the family members to resolve the issue.”
He added, “This included concerted efforts in recent days to seek more time for the family of Ms Nimisha Priya to reach a mutually agreeable solution with the other party. The local authorities in Yemen have postponed carrying out her sentence scheduled for July 16, 2025.”
Describing the matter as sensitive, Jaiswal said, “We continue to closely follow the matter and render all possible assistance. We are also in touch with some friendly governments in this regard.”
Responding to a query about the role of Sheikh Abubakr Ahmad, who has been mentioned in reports as involved in mediation efforts, the spokesperson said, “As far as the role of the entity you mentioned is concerned, I have no information to share.”
Nimisha Priya, a nurse from Kerala, was sentenced to death in Yemen in connection with the death of a Yemeni national. Her family is working to reach a blood money settlement, a practice under Yemeni law, to secure her release.
