Active Covid 19 cases in India crossed the 4000-mark on Tuesday with five new deaths reported in the last 24 hours. According to the official ministry of health and family welfare dashboard, there are 4026 active cases with Kerala still topping the list. 171 new cases were reported, pushing the state’s active caseload to 1,416.
Delhi witnessed a significant increase in cases, with 124 new infections reported, bringing its active case count to 393. Maharashtra reported 69 new cases, raising the number of active cases in the state to 494. West Bengal recorded 11 new cases, increasing its active case count to 372.
ICMR director general Rajiv Behl on Monday confirmed that genome sequencing of samples from southern and western India indicates the current surge in cases is driven by sub-variants of Omicron, which are not classified as severe.
"We have been closely monitoring the situation. At this moment overall, we should monitor, be vigilant but there is no cause to worry," he said.
