Gujarat shows that progress and traditions can co-exist: Freddy Daruwala

Send Push
Gujarat has shaped me and is the backbone of my existence,” says Freddy, who was born in Surat but lives in Mumbai now. The Holiday: A Soldier Is Never Off Duty actor adds, “I miss the warmth and hospitality Gujarat and its people offer. There is a rare purity and simplicity in our interactions. Also, in Gujarat, we don’t have to plan in advance to meet friends. I miss making these impromptu plans in Mumbai. Watching cities like Ahmedabad, Surat, and Vadodara evolve into modern, urban hubs is a proud moment. Despite this rapid development, we still see people doing garba during Navratri with the same passion, or families getting together on Sundays. Gujarat shows that progress and traditions can co-exist.”

He adds, “Personally, Gujarat has grounded me with strong family values and a deep-rooted sense of culture. Professionally, it gave me the confidence to dream big. That classic Gujarati drive-the desire to grow, to do more, to create something-has played a big role in my journey as an actor and entrepreneur. Gujarat has given me not just roots, but wings as well.”

Is he a pakko Gujarati? He laughs, “Oh yes! I never travel without theplas or khakhra. I keep an eye on the share market even during shoots, and I love to bargain. There’s always a dabba of ganthiya or sev at my home. My mom still makes methiyu, chhundo, gol keri achaar and papad, and I help her.”

Talking about working in Gujarati films, Freddy says, "Working in Gujarati films is like coming home-the comfort and cultural familiarity make the process more personal. Gujarati cinema is undergoing a transformation and there is a hunger to tell rooted yet modern stories. It feels special to contribute to the growth of our own industry."
