When it comes to Tyrrell Hatton, an explosion of frustration is never far away. No sooner had the Englishman moved to within one shot of the overall lead in the at Quail Hollow than he was cursing and swearing after dropping back out of contention.

The rebel started the day well placed on three-under-par after an opening round of 68. After teeing off on the 10th on Friday, he picked up another shot early on before a birdie on the 17th left him tied for second behind Colombian Jhonattan Vegas. However, just one hole later, his challenge unravelled.

After appearing to take a driver, Hatton found water off the tee on the 494-yard par four. He then took his frustrations out on the club, looking at it as he shouted: "Piece of s***... c**t!"

The audio was broadcast live on , with the commentators having to apologise to viewers. Hatton's mood, or his play, didn't improve from there after taking a penalty drop.

His third shot then flew from the rough on the left-hand side of the fairway over to further trouble on the right. His next effort scarcely made it out of the long grass and fell well short of the green.

Clearly angry, the 33-year-old then shot his approach through the green, before putting his return chip to within six feet. He then holed a difficult putt for a triple bogey seven, ruining his progress over the opening nine holes.

It wasn't the first time Hatton had lashed out at the tournament. On Thursday, on the par-three 17th hole short and well right of the flag, shouting: "Oh my god, worst f*****g..."

It didn't start any better for Hatton on his back nine either. He soon dropped another stroke to fall five off the lead, with his hopes of a first major title already appearing remote.
