Trainers are footwear that most of us wear daily, whether heading to the gym, office, or casual outings. Given their frequent use, a pristine new pair rarely stays spotless for long. The white rubber trim around the sole-commonly seen on brands like Converse, Vans, and Vejas-invariably becomes the first casualty of dirt and scuffs, reports the Daily Record.
This immediately gives your fresh footwear a tatty, well-worn appearance, which is particularly galling given today's steep shoe prices. Fortunately, Mrs Hinch enthusiasts have once again provided salvation with a widely-praised remedy that can restore your trainers to pristine condition. The simple trick emerged on the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips Facebook group, where countless cleaning experts share guidance for those battling domestic dilemmas.
Recently, one woman turned to the community for advice on maintaining her footwear's appearance. She posted: "Good afternoon. Can anyone recommend a way to make the dirty white look white again on my Vans, please? Thank you."
Her accompanying photograph revealed Vans with distinctly grubby white rubber soles. Fortunately, fellow group members swiftly rallied with cleaning suggestions-though one solution clearly dominated the responses.
One member advised, "Toothpaste, scrub with an old toothbrush," while another confirmed, "Whitening toothpaste, leave on a while, then wash off."
Someone else quipped: "Toothpaste works brilliantly with a brush too! And if a family member is getting on your nerves that day, use their brush!"
This tip is supported by Better Homes and Gardens, which similarly advised using toothpaste for trainer cleaning in a blog post. They stated: "Use an old toothbrush and white toothpaste to scrub dirt and grime out of almost any kind of shoes."
Beyond toothpaste, group members shared numerous other popular remedies. One individual suggested: "Spray Elbow Grease on a magic eraser and they'll come up like new."
Magic erasers are dense melamine sponges that are cheap to buy and often only need a little water to achieve impressive cleaning results around the house.
Another recommended: "I put mine in a net bag in washing machine at 20 degrees come out clean."
A third member proposed: "I saw somewhere else cotton wool and nail polish remover."
