The Gilded Age, which has been renewed for another season, airs on Sky and HBO and episode seven of season three left another character's life hanging in the balance, following the tragic accident involving John Adams (played by Claybourne Elder).

Just as the Russell family were starting to get their lives back on track, a shocking development left fans wondering whether George Russell (Morgan Spector) was dead.

George managed to save his family fortune after his son Larry (Harry Richardson) discovered a copper mine in Arizona.

Celebrating the turn of events, George had been staying at the gentlemen's club against his wife's wishes.

In a tragic twist, he ended up being shot with not one, but two bullets, by a gunman disguised as a delivery worker.

Fans were left wondering whether George survived the attack, with the gunman's identity remaining hidden.

Some fan theories have suggested it was his former aide, Clay (Patrick Page) getting his revenge after George fired him from the business.

George star Spector did not sound positive about his character's fate when he told Variety: "You should be very worried. In the 19th century, gunshot wounds from up close were extremely dangerous. Many people didn't survive them. I don't have a contract for next season yet, so who knows?"
