VAR stepped in to award Brennan Johnson a goal during Tottenham's clash with Manchester City on Saturday afternoon after the strike had originally been chalked off for offside. Johnson found the net in the 35th minute with a composed finish following excellent build-up play and a precise cross from Richarlison.
However, the Brazilian was initially flagged for offside after his teammate had beaten James Trafford. Yet semi-automated offside technology is now operational and the decision was reversed after a swift VAR review, much to the joy of the travelling Spurs supporters.
The ruling was confirmed by the Premier League Match Centre account on X, which stated: "VAR checked the referee's call of no goal for Tottenham Hotspur - and established that Richarlison was in an onside position in the build-up and recommended that the goal was awarded."
Matters improved further for Tottenham just moments later when Joao Palhinha bagged his maiden goal for the club to extend their advantage on the cusp of half-time.
Both Spurs and City secured victories in their opening fixtures last weekend, with Thomas Frank's team defeating Burnley 3-0 whilst City demolished Wolves 4-0.
Tottenham have maintained an impressive record against City in recent campaigns and even thrashed the former Premier League champions 4-0 in the equivalent match last season. Spurs, who suffered a blow in the transfer market this week after missing out on Ebere Eze to rivals Arsenal, will be looking to bounce back with a win over City.
The Crystal Palace playmaker had been in discussions to join Spurs as a replacement for the injured James Maddison, but Arsenal made a last-minute bid and are now set to secure the England star's signature.
