Fans of the period drama genre should look no further, as there is a highly-rated historical series they may not have seen yet. It has been hailed as "the best period drama" and also billed a "masterpiece" by fans. Victoria is a British historical television drama series created and principally written by Daisy Goodwin. Starring Jenna Coleman as Queen Victoria, the series follows Victoria's early life. Tom Hughes, Peter Bowles, and Catherine Flemming star alongside Coleman.
The series synopsis reads: "This eight-part drama features an all-star cast including Jenna Coleman as a young Queen Victoria and Tom Hughes as Prince Albert. The monarch's life is chronicled as the story begins with the death of King William IV in 1837, her accession to the throne at the tender age of 18 and her relationships with the influential forces around her. With the advice of the prime minister Lord Melbourne and the support of her husband Prince Albert the young queen flourishes and establishes herself in her newfound role."
Masterpiece highlighted Victoria at the top of their listing of "The Best Period Dramas to Feast Your Eyes On Now". It said: "You're definitely in store for diplomatic intrigue, scandals, and an irresistible mix of real-life history and fiction. But the shimmering heart of Victoria is the queen's evolving relationship with Albert, and the tender challenges of growing a family in the spotlight. Victoria illuminates the powerful evolution of Queen Victoria as formidable leader, mother and wife, and offers a glimpse into her life and enduring legacy."
The period drama, which ran for a total of three series, has an 87% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Its critics' consensus states: "Historical liberties aside, Victoria continues its reign as one of TVs most handsomely rendered offerings."

A fan of the show described the series as a "masterpiece", while another said it was "one of the most beautiful and capturing TV series" they'd ever seen.
"I loved the way Albert and Victoria's relationship has progressed through each season, the ending this time was heart wrenching knowing the historical reality so I really need another season and for the show writers to completely ignore reality," another added.
Victoria is available to stream on ITVX.
