Joao Fonseca sent a heartfelt message to his mother after winning the biggest title of his career at the Swiss Indoors. The young Brazilian prevailed over Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in straight sets to claim victory in the ATP 500 event. Almost immediately after hitting the final point, he rushed to his family in the stands and they shared a warm embrace.
They were initially planning to fly from Brazil to support him in next week's Paris Masters, but made a last-minute decision to travel to Switzerland for the match. Fonseca's mother was reduced to tears and received a special shout-out in his post-match interview. He dedicated the victory to her and thanked his family for their unwavering support over the years.
"They were the ones who believed in me," he said. "I was thinking about going to university. They were like: 'It's your choice. We're gonna be there to support you no matter what you choose'.
"I want to thank them. Since I was young my mum travelled with me. Since I was 11 I only travelled with her. This title is for her."
Quizzed on his immediate thoughts after winning his first ATP 500 tournament, Fonseca replied: "It's crazy. It's tough to say because we have been through a lot. I want to thank my family and coaches that helped me achieve this amazing effort.
"My parents just came from Brazil. They were going to Paris but just changed their flight and came here like one hour before the match. It's amazing to have them here for the biggest title of my career."
Fonseca's triumph in Switzerland means he will be seeded for next year's Australian Open, having entered the top 30 in the ATP rankings.
He was dominant from start to finish, breaking early to take control of the opening set. Both players made unforced errors but Fonseca was more clinical, hitting 14 winners against only four from Davidovich Fokina.
The teenager secured another break at the start of the second set and kept his opponent at arm's length with his impeccable service games. He stayed strong under pressure to claim a 6-3 6-4 victory after one hour and 26 minutes.
Davidovich Fokina was visibly disappointed after the match but kept it classy in defeat with some kind words for Fonseca in his runner-up speech.
"You played unbelievable tennis today," said the Spaniard. "You are the person of this sport. You have a bright future for sure. You're gonna be the next one to beat Carlos [Alcaraz] and Jannik [Sinner] for sure."
