In a unique and somewhat unexpected turn, the Supreme Court of India recently advised a couple to consult an astrologer to decide the right time to get divorced. The couple's long-standing marital dispute had reached the top court, where the judges noted that the relationship had clearly broken down beyond repair.
While stating that separation was the best path forward, the court suggested the wife take astrological advice to determine the most suitable time to finalize the divorce. The court has given the couple four weeks to mutually resolve the terms of separation.
Divorce on the Rise in IndiaIndia, traditionally known for its low divorce rate (once reported to be just 1%), is witnessing a gradual but noticeable shift. A Moneycontrol survey last year found that divorces have increased significantly over the past seven years. Similarly, a Bumble survey revealed that 81% of Indian women now prefer to stay single rather than be in unfulfilling marriages.
Additionally, an Investopedia study noted that around 65% of newly married Indian couples are not planning to have children—another sign of changing attitudes toward conventional family structures.
Why Are More Marriages Ending?Relationship expert Leena Paranjape attributes the rising divorce rates to women’s growing economic independence. Globally, about 70% of divorce cases are initiated by women, and India reflects the same trend. Deepika Rathore, another relationship coach, believes that the decline in social pressure to marry young is giving individuals more freedom to prioritize personal happiness and career goals over societal expectations.
