'I tried Emma Stone's hooded eye make-up trick that has fans saying she's had a facelift'

There's been much talk on social media in recent months about Emma Stone's striking new look. Earlier this year the La La Land actor chopped her auburn hair into a pixie cut, which is now growing out into a slightly longer, tousled 'do – but it's not just this that's got people talking.

Some have suggested that the 36-year-old's face looks different too, in particular her eye area – brows slightly more raised, eyes a little less hooded – speculating she may have undergone cosmetic or surgical procedures such as an expertly done upper blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) or a brow lift.

Perhaps she had, or perhaps it's just a couple of clever make-up tricks – and I've tried one of them out on my own hooded eyes...

From studying some recent red carpet photos of Emma's make-up, I think the biggest change has been with her (or rather, her make-up artist's) eyeliner technique. Whereas previously she would often wear quite a thick liner, starting from the middle of her eye outwards, she now seems to be favouring a very very thin line of liquid eyeliner that instead reaches right from the very inner corner of her eyes and ends in a subtle flick. This has the effect of elongating the whole eye without taking up much lid space.

To copy this look, you need a very fluid, very smooth black liquid felt tip-style liner, one that won't drag or skip on the lid; I love Dior Diorshow Liquid Liner, £35, for its blacker-than-black pigment and super-smooth nib (L'Oréal Paris Superliner Perfect Slim Eyeliner, £7.99, is a good high-street alternative).

Then, starting from the innermost corner, draw the thinnest line you possibly can, as near to the lashes as you can, ending with a very tiny lift at the outer end. The trick is to make the liner look like part of the eyelashes, so really press it into the hairs. You can also use your pen to dot between or underneath the lash line.

I think this had a huge impact on how my eyes looked. I don't normally use liquid eyeliner and would typically keep any eyeliner to the outer half only, but this technique really lifted and lengthened my eye shape. Add to this a brow that's brushed more straight than arched, and I think you've got what could pass for an instant eye lift – and a new favourite make-up technique for me.
