'Fisherman core' is trending and this is my take on festival wear in a seaside park

Last year the summer fashion trend was dominated by "cottagecore" but this year it's the return of an iconic 90s trend - "fisherman core". That's the utility wear, breton stripes, hardworking sandals that we are talking about and they are the perfect fashion pieces to wear to a festival.

As a fairly newcomer to attending music festivals, I recently jetted off to Portugal and went to the OutFest Electronic Sun Festival in the seaside municipality of Cascais, just an hour away from the Portuguese capital on train. As a day festival which I see it as an entry level to unlock the overseas festival experience, that also meant I can pack less for my outfit.

To trial and fully embrace the fisherman core, I chose the and the matchingas a co-ord set (£55 each) and completed with a bucket hat and a pair of , £70. The outfit ticked all the boxes as a fisherman core look, but it also gave me peace of mind to keep my personal belongings safe.

Shoppers can also consider (£31) for a double denim "cool-girl" look. The contrast stitching and clean pocket details are similar to the trending fisherman core.

Compared to major festivals, the OutFest was smaller in scale. It took place in Parque Marechal Carmona, where I danced along with the peacocks, roosters and ducks that reside there. To dress for the hot Portuguese weather, the Columbia Elevated View Shirt features sweat-wicking fabric that draws moisture away from the skin and mesh back venting, to keep me feeling fresh and dry.

But having said that, when the sun set and the temperature dropped, I felt cold and was hoping that I had brought a jacket with me. With a full zip at the front, I could unzip the shirt and turned it into an overshirt instead so I'd look less like a Girl Scout.

To add a pop of colour to my outfit, I wore an azure blue bralette and wore with the shirt unzipped. But the Elevated View Cargo Skort is the item that kept me dancing through the night thanks to the multiple pockets that offered a safe haven to my phone and key cards.

The skort with thick elasticated waistband delivered the comfort of a short with the look of a skirt and to keep my load light, I wanted to avoid bringing any bags and keep my hands-free and this skort did what I asked for. I kept my cards, wipes, and even my 6.7-inch in the zipped pockets - it elminated the worries of dropping my cards or dancing with the weight of the phone over my neck with a lanyard.

They are crease-free so there's no iron needed and it's easy to pack them in a suitcase. The Columbia co-ord is easy to wear, but I would like to see more patterns than the very neutral Safari green, Lemon Wash beige and Black. The shirt collar tends to stay quite close even when the zip is open and I had to adjust it a few times before taking snaps of my outfit.

Other than the mountain sports brand, Mango also offers a in tan and it's on 70% off on ASOS, dropping the price to £15. The, however, is sold out.

Onto the footwear, I picked the Teva Hurricane XL2 - a popular pair for day hikes and all day wear with supportive midsole. My brother has two pairs of the same model and he swears by the comfort so I got one in Burnt Olive to match with my Columbia outfit in Safari.

They are essentially sport sandals equipped with quick-drying webbing on the straps and robust EVA footbed for comfort. The straps are comfortable to wear with no rubbing during my five-hour EDM music rave. But that's not the case for my brother. The Teva shoes are treated with Life Natural, a peppermint-based anti odour treatment.

Birkenstock's sandals are also odour-proof thanks to the cork latex footbed, which is naturally antimicrobial. The feature a thick strap to prevent ankle twisting, they are currently on sale at Schuh for £67.99.
