When a person has an epileptic attack , he loses control over the muscles of his throat and mouth . In such a situation , if you try to give him water , the water can go straight into the windpipe .

During an epilepsy the patient is not fully conscious . In this condition if water is given to him he cannot swallow it or spit it out , which can lead to a dangerous condition like aspiration pneumonia .
