Cases of both variants of corona NB.1.8.1 and LF.7 have increased rapidly in many countries, due to this there has been a rapid jump in infection in the Indian population as well. WHO has now classified it as a variant of monitoring.
The corona epidemic that started in the last weeks of December 2019 is still not over. The pace of infection was controlled for the last few months, however now this virus has become active once again. RNA viruses keep mutating continuously according to their nature, in this sequence mutations have also been seen in coronavirus and new variants have also been emerging.
In the last one-two years, cases of Omicron variant have been reported the most worldwide. Omicron's sub-variants (NB.1.8.1 and LF.7) have been found responsible for this increasing outbreak.
According to the data of the Union Health Ministry's COVID dashboard on May 27 (Tuesday), the total number of active cases in the country is 1010. 753 new cases have been reported since May 19. So far 6 people have died due to corona in the country.
Amidst the increasing cases of corona, there are many questions in the minds of the people, should one get a COVID test done as soon as one has a cold and cough? Is another wave going to come, will everyone have to take the vaccine again...? Apart from this, are people having breathing problems and needing oxygen like the Delta variant in this infection as well? Let's understand about it in detail.
WHO also became alert
Cases of both sub-variants of Corona NB.1.8.1 and LF.7 have increased rapidly in many countries including India, due to which there has been a rapid jump in infection in the Indian population as well. In view of the increasing risks, the World Health Organization (WHO) has now classified NB.1.8.1 as a variant of monitoring, till now it was kept as a variant of interest.
Variant of monitoring means that now this form of the virus needs attention and monitoring on a priority basis.
During the variant of interest, an attempt is made to understand the changes in the virus and its effect, this classification means that the variant is not of much concern.
Know about this variant
According to Yale Medicine, cases of JN.1 strain (informally 'Pirola') were being seen the most in the last few years. After mutation in it, two new sub-variants NB.1.8.1 and LF.7 emerged. Some mutations (such as A435S, V445H and T478I) have been observed in its spike protein which are making it more infectious than other variants and helping it to escape the immunity built in the body. This is the reason why even those people are getting infected who have already completed the vaccination dose or have also taken booster shots.
Since the immunity built in the body also weakens over time, this virus is spreading effectively.
What problems are the infected facing?
What problems are the infected facing in the country, what kind of symptoms are being seen in them, are people having breathing problems again and will oxygen be needed? To understand this, we spoke to Dr. Upendra Singh of Critical Care at a hospital in Pune.
The doctor says, there are currently more than 1000 active cases in the country. Most people are recovering at home, there are a large number of patients who do not even know that they are infected. However, people with comorbidities or weak immunity need to be hospitalized in some situations. At present, no different or serious symptoms have been seen in such patients.
People infected with NB.1.8.1 are also showing symptoms similar to other Omicron sub-variants. These include persistent cough, sore throat, fatigue-headache, loss of appetite, gastrointestinal problems. There are no respiratory problems or other serious problems, there are also no cases of lack of oxygen at present. The variant is definitely contagious but is not dangerous or fatal.
