Indian-origin rapper Genesis Yasmine Mohanraj, popularly known by her stage name Tommy Genesis, is facing backlash after the release of her latest music video, True Blue. The video has sparked outrage online for its controversial visuals, where Tommy is seen dressed as a Hindu Goddess while also using a Christian cross as a prop. This has drawn criticism from not only the Hindu and Christian communities, but also others who accused the artist of disrespecting religious sentiments and engaging in cultural insensitivity.
Social media users flooded the comments section of the video with angry reactions, calling the portrayal 'deeply offensive' and 'disrespectful'.
Who is Genesis Yasmine Mohanraj aka Tommy Genesis?
Yasmine is a rapper, singer, and visual artist. She is known for her bold music, provocative themes and unapologetic persona. Over the years, she has carved a unique space in the underground hip-hop scene.
Born Genesis Yasmine Mohanraj in Vancouver, the artist is of Malayali-Tamil and Swedish descent. She began her musical journey in 2013 and gained recognition after releasing her debut mixtape World Vision in 2015 under Awful Records.
Her blend of trap, industrial beats, and hyper-sexualised lyrics reportedly earned her the label of a 'fetish rapper'.
In 2018, the 34-year-old rapper released her self-titled debut studio album, Tommy Genesis, followed by her second album Goldilocks X in 2021.

Aside from music, Tommy Genesis modelled for Calvin Klein's 2016 Fall campaign and has graced major fashion events, including a performance at M.I.A.'s Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week show.
A graduate of Emily Carr University of Art and Design, she reportedly has a background in sculpture and filmmaking.

Tommy Genesis' controversial song True Blue
In the controversial music video, the rapper can be seen dressed up like Hindu Goddess with blue paint and gold jewellery, complete with a red bindi. At the same time, she can also be seen carrying a cross, licking it, and even posing with it by placing it near her posterior.
She is also seen holding a cigarette and smoking in the music video. This has not gone down well people and she has been slammed on social media.
