Northeast India has been affected by heavy rainfall, landslides, and widespread flooding in recent days. People from numerous states, including Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur, have been affected by rainfall over four days. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert in many states as heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to occur in the upcoming days and the rainfall is likely to be accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning.
IMD issues a red alert in these states
The weather department has issued a red alert in the states, including Assam, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, Mizoram, and Nagaland, as heavy to very heavy rainfall is anticipated on Monday. Similar alerts have been issued in Meghalaya. The IMD has further forecasted isolated heavy showers over West Bengal, Sikkim, and Uttarakhand. Apart from these states, thunderstorm activity is forecasted in northwest India, especially Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, and Haryana, and also in west Uttar Pradesh is also predicted by the IMD for June 2.
Why is the Northeast experiencing heavy rainfall?
The northeastern states are experiencing heavy rainfall due to the early onset of the southwest monsoon and depression over Bangladesh and Meghalaya. This depression is bringing a lot of moisture-laden air, which is influencing the weather in many states and causing widespread rainfall. The combination of these facts, along with the geographical features of the region, is leading to the current situation.
The weather department issued an advisory
The weather department has issued an advisory for residents in the Northeast to be cautious of heavy rainfall. The IMD suggests avoiding unnecessary travel during heavy rain and taking safety measures, like staying indoors.
If you live in a low-lying area, be ready for possible flooding or waterlogging. Keep animals indoors due to heavy rain and farmers should move their harvested crops to a safe place. Regularly check the IMD website and local news for the latest updates on rainfall.
