As part of the nationwide observance marking 50 years since the imposition of Emergency in India, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) organized a powerful student rally and an informative photo exhibition, aimed at fostering awareness about democracy and constitutional values.
Hundreds of students participated in a rally that began at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Chowk in Vashi and proceeded through Sector 16 to the Vishnudas Bhave Auditorium. Waving the national flag and raising slogans like “India +- The Mother of Democracy” and “Salute to the Power of Democracy,” students marched to the tunes of patriotic songs, drawing the attention of local residents and commuters.
The rally culminated at the auditorium. This was followed with the State Forest Minister Ganesh Naik inaugurating a specially curated photo exhibition on the Emergency era. The exhibition features rare photographs depicting India’s ancient democratic roots, landmark events during the 1975 Emergency, and the heroic efforts of individuals who stood up for democratic values during that time. Also on display are visuals and information about various welfare schemes launched by the government to strengthen democratic governance today.
Speaking at the inauguration, Minister Naik emphasized the importance of remembering the lessons of the Emergency and strengthening democratic consciousness among the youth. “This exhibition is not just about the past—it is about ensuring a better, more democratic future,” he noted.
Also present at the event were Belapur MLA Manda Mhatre, MLA Sharad Sonawane, Municipal Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde, and Additional Commissioner Sunil Pawar. The dignitaries, along with citizens and students, signed a symbolic message board titled “Long Live Democracy” inside the auditorium to show their commitment to democratic values.

The highlight of the venue was a replica of the Sengol, a traditional sceptre symbolizing justice and governance, which served as a visual reminder of India's constitutional ethos.
NMMC announced that the photo exhibition will remain open for public viewing at Vishnudas Bhave Auditorium for the next month, encouraging citizens especially students and educators to visit and engage with the country’s democratic journey.
