Maharashtra Day 2025: What's open and what's closed on May 1

Send Push
May 1 is observed as Maharashtra Day , a state holiday that commemorates the formation of Maharashtra in 1960. On this day, the bilingual Bombay State was divided, creating the separate states of Maharashtra and Gujarat. The day holds political, historical, and cultural significance for the people of the state and is marked by official ceremonies, parades, and public observances.

Being a public holiday under the Negotiable Instruments Act, Maharashtra Day affects a wide range of services. Here’s what residents need to know about what's open and what's closed on May 1.

Banks and financial marketsAll banks across Maharashtra, including in major cities like Mumbai, Nagpur, and Pune, will remain closed. The holiday is recognized in the Reserve Bank of India’s official calendar.

The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and National Stock Exchange (NSE) will also remain shut for the day. This includes all equity, currency, and debt segments.

However, the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) will operate during its evening session, from 5:00 PM to 11:30 PM, while the morning session will be closed.

Shops, businesses, and liquor salesThe majority of stores and businesses are either closed or have shortened hours. Malls and large retail stores may remain open, although because of the holiday, foot traffic is typically decreased.

Importantly, May 1 is also observed as a dry day across the state, meaning liquor sales are prohibited. Bars, pubs, and liquor shops will not serve or sell alcohol.

Transportation and essential servicesEssential services such as hospitals, emergency services, and public utilities will continue to function normally.

Despite the possibility of less traffic than normal because of the vacation, public transportation will be available, including Mumbai's suburban trains, metro, buses (BEST and MSRTC), and auto/taxi services.

How the day is celebratedThe state government organizes official parades, particularly in Mumbai, where the Governor delivers a speech and salutes the police force. Citizens often mark the day by participating in cultural events, flag hoisting ceremonies, and public programs that celebrate the Marathi language and Maharashtra's legacy.
