'My career is derailed': Analyst claims "one bad judgment call" during notice period got him fired and blacklisted

An Indian professional has shared a heartbreaking story online, claiming that one accidental mistake during his notice period has left his career in ruins. The post, shared anonymously on Reddit, has drawn attention to how fragile employee exits can be, especially when it comes to background verification (BGV) in India’s competitive job market.

A mistake during notice period

The man, a senior analyst in the oil and gas research sector, said he had been with the same company for over four years and had even worked on business process automation projects. According to his post, while preparing to leave the company, he tried to transfer personal files to his personal drive, but by mistake, some official documents were also downloaded.

“There was no malicious intent. I didn’t think it would cause trouble, I was just trying to finish some work,” he wrote.

However, the company treated the issue as a data breach. His resignation was cancelled, and he was terminated immediately.

No exit documents, no job

The situation got worse when he found out that he wouldn’t receive any experience letter, clearance, or official exit documents, just a termination letter. Without these papers, he says he cannot pass background checks, and companies are rejecting him outright.

“Now when I apply to other companies, I fail background verification. My previous company even flagged me during BGV with a reputed firm,” he added.

He admitted it was a poor decision, but felt the punishment was too harsh.

Emotional impact and plea for help

The man said the entire experience has shattered his confidence. “It’s hard to even get a chance to explain myself to recruiters. This has affected my mental peace, and I’m struggling,” he said.

He ended the post with a plea for guidance or support, asking anyone who could help to reach out.

Reactions from the online community

Reddit users offered support and suggestions. One said, “I think your only option is to meet with HR and explain your side of the story, beg if you have to.”

Another added, “It looks like an honest mistake. Reach out and plead. That’s the only way you might get any resolution.”
