New Delhi: In a dramatic turn of events, a lawyer on Monday tried to attack Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai in the Supreme Court. The incident happened while a bench headed by CJI Gavai was hearing mentioning of urgent cases by lawyers. According to people in the know, the lawyer went near the dais and attempted to remove his shoe and throw it at the CJI. However, security personnel intervened and escorted the lawyer out. While walking out, the lawyer was heard saying, "Sanatan ka apman nahi sahenge.
The CJI remained unfazed and told the lawyers present in court to not get distracted. "We are not distracted. These things do not affect me," the CJI verbally remarked.
Taking stern note of the incident, the Bar Council of India (BCI) suspended advocate Rakesh Kishore from practice with immediate effect. During the period of suspension, Kishore will stand debarred from appearing, acting, pleading or practising before any court, tribunal or authority in India.
The incident could be reportedly linked to CJI Gavai's comments during a hearing on September 16 regarding the restoration of a Vishnu idol in Khajuraho had led to a controversy.
