A 100 metre section of Indore-Jabalpur bypass which connects Indore, Hoshangabad, Jabalpur, Mandla and Sagar near Sukhi Sevania on the outskirts of Bhopal caved in on Monday afternoon. A major tragedy was averted as there was no traffic at the time of cave-in. The Sukhi Sevania police have diverted the traffic away from the damaged section of the road. The MP Road Development Corporation (MPRDC), which maintains the road, has announced a probe into the cave-in by a panel led by a chief engineer.
On Monday, a stretch of road on the Bhopal eastern bypass collapsed due to damage to one side of the retaining wall of the railway overbridge ( ROB), PWD Principal Secretary Sukhveer Singh said to TOI. There were no injuries or damage to property reported in the incident. He added that a committee has been formed to investigate the cause of the collapse. The committee includes Chief Engineer B.S. Meena and General Managers Manoj Gupta and R.S. Chandel. Singh stated that strict action will be taken against those found responsible.
The road was built in 2013 under buildoperation-transfer (BOT) model by a company but in 2020, contract with the company was cancelled as it failed to meet the terms and conditions of the contract, MPRDC officials told TOI.
Station House Officer (SHO) Rambabu Chaudhary of Sukhi Sewania police station confirmed that they received information around 12 noon about the road developing cracks and sinking. “We rushed to the spot and barricaded the road. A police contingent was also deployed,” he said. Officials from the Madhya Pradesh Road Development Corporation (MPRDC) later visited the site.
According to SHO Chaudhary, traffic was diverted immediately after the collapse. He said that approximately 50 metres of road on the Sukhi Sewania–Kalyanpura/Bilkhiria stretch was affected. The retaining wall had collapsed, causing about 30 feet of the 40-foot-wide lane to sink. Cracks were first observed around noon, after which traffic was rerouted.
Eyewitnesses told TOI that the road suddenly developed cracks, after which it collapsed. Another eyewitness Rakesh Sonkar reported that he was en route to Kalyanpura when one side of the road beyond the ROB began to develop cracks. A portion of the road collapsed shortly after. According to him, commuters and bystanders informed the police immediately, and a police team arrived quickly to manage the situation and divert traffic.
In July, a similar road cave-in had occurred near Jyoti Talkies in MP Nagar. As with Monday’s incident, there was no damage to life or property. The Public Works Department (PWD), which is responsible for maintaining the road, had then attributed the collapse to an underground nullah flowing beneath the surface. The affected portion of the road had not been barricaded as of the last reports.
PWD Minister Rakesh Singh, speaking to TOI from Delhi airport, said he had just received information about the incident. He assured that a detailed probe would be conducted, including an investigation into possible technical lapses. He also said the road would be repaired at the earliest.
Leaders from the Congress party also arrived at the location and held a protest, alleging poor quality of public infrastructure under the BJP-led government. Manoj Shukla, who led the demonstration, claimed that a major accident could have occurred if a heavy vehicle had been passing at the time. He also noted the proximity of the road to a railway line and the nearby Sukhi Sewania railway station.
