The United States is the world’s biggest aviation market, with 876 million passengers per year in 2024, mostly flying domestic. That is four times the number of air passengers in India, the world’s most populous country and the fifth-largest aviation market, as per the World Air Transport Statistics report by the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

China is closing in on the United States, ranking second with 741 million air passengers in 2024 and showing a strong annual growth of 18.7 percent, compared to America's 5.2 percent.

The United Kingdom, despite being just 94,000 square miles in size, ranks third globally in aviation with 261 million passengers in 2024. Spain follows in fourth place with 241 million passengers last year, thanks in large part to its status as a top vacation destination for many travelers, including those from the UK.

The IATA report also revealed that nine out of 10 of the world’s busiest flight routes are in the Asia-Pacific region. However, the world’s No.1 is a South Korean domestic flight: the 1 hour and 15 minute trip between the island resort city of Jeju (CJU) and the capital, Seoul (GMP). More than 13 million passengers flew the route in 2024.
