Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer was penalised INR 12 lakh after PBKS were found guilty of maintaining a slow over-rate against Chennai Super Kings on Wednesday at Chepauk Stadium. Notably, this is PBKS' first such offence this season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct.
During the first innings, PBKS were forced to bring an extra fielder inside the circle before the final over due to the slow over-rate.
Shreyas Iyer now joins a growing list of players fined for over-rate violations in IPL 2025. Others include Rajat Patidar (RCB), Shubman Gill (GT), Axar Patel (DC), Sanju Samson and Riyan Parag (RR), Rishabh Pant (LSG) and Hardik Pandya (MI).
However, that didn’t stop the visitors from turning the game on its head, thanks to a stunning performance by Yuzvendra Chahal. The leg-spinner picked up four wickets in a single over, including a hat-trick- his second in IPL history - dismantling CSK’s hopes of a big finish.
Electing to bowl first, PBKS were under pressure as Sam Curran smashed a 47-ball 88, helping CSK reach 177 for 5 in 18 overs. At that point, a total of over 200 looked likely. But Chahal's spell changed everything as CSK collapsed, losing their last five wickets for just six runs to be bowled out for 190 in 19.2 overs.

In response, Shreyas Iyer stepped up with a commanding 41-ball 72, anchoring PBKS’s chase with five fours and four sixes. Iyer now leads the franchise’s run-scoring chart, narrowly ahead of Prabhsimran Singh, who also chipped in with a vital fifty during the chase.
The four-wicket win took Punjab to second on the points table, further strengthening their bid for a top-four finish. They will return to action on May 4 against LSG.
Meanwhile, CSK’s campaign continues to spiral downward. With just four points from ten games, they have officially been knocked out of the playoff race. They will meet RCB next on May 3.
