India missed out on a golden opportunity to take a 2-1 series lead in the Tests against England on July 14. Resuming on 58/4 and needing 135 more to win, India folded for 170 and lost by 22 runs. What that means is that England have a 2-1 lead with two games left in the series. A match that should have been in the bag for Shubman Gill’s men saw Ben Stokes lead by example and win the game for England.
India’s ‘Lone Warrior’But amid all the chaos that was India’s second innings, one man stood tall. That man was Ravindra Jadeja. The 36-year-old fought to the very end in a Test that personally would be one to remember for him. Sadly, it was not enough to win it. After a brilliant 72 in the first innings, Jadeja made 61 not out in the second and almost took India over the line.

Jadeja faced 181 balls and hit four fours along with a six. In the first innings, his knock came in 131 balls with eight fours and a six. India and England both made 387 and England managed 192 after that. Thus India needed 193 to win and they were so near yet so far.
Social Media ReactsThe effort from the southpaw did not go unnoticed on social media. Praise poured in from all quarters as fans praised his heroics and defiance. Jadeja stood alone against some hostile bowling and if he had received just a little bit more support, he could have taken India home. KL Rahul (39) was the only other batter who looked in control at the crease. Here’s what the fans had to say as the internet buzzed with reactions:
Feel for Ravindra Jadeja — he tried, he gave his all, and that’s the only thing sports ever asks for pic.twitter.com/iQaNQNYPLJ

Test Match Jaddu Jadeja pic.twitter.com/EbAXrc2ab4
Jadeja has not always got the credit with the bat that he deserves but in Tests, time and again he has proven himself to be the genuine all-rounder. The man excels in all three departments and it will be difficult to replace him as he turns 37 this year meaning he’s in the twilight of his career.
Advantage EnglandThe next Test starts on July 23 at Old Trafford in Manchester. India have to win to make it 2-2 and then take the series into the decider. India have not won a Test series in England since 2007 while England have not lost a Test series at home since 2021. If England can win the next game, the series will be in the bag. If India manage a draw in the next match then they will have to win the last match to make it 2-2. Should the series end in a draw, India will retain the rubber having won the 2024 home series 4-1.
