The Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) has demanded that the Central Government and the Income Tax Department extend the last date for Income Tax Return (ITR) and tax audit. GCCI says that this year, the necessary facilities for filing ITR, like forms and utilities, have been issued very late. Due to this, taxpayers and chartered accountants are facing huge difficulties.
The government had earlier fixed the last date for ITR as 31 July 2025; later, it was extended to 15 September 2025. But GCCI says that this did not provide any special relief because the necessary forms and utilities were issued only in July and August. In such a situation, people did not get time to file returns properly.
What did GCCI say?
GCCI said in an official letter dated 11 August 2025, "We would like to bring to your notice that taxpayers, CAs, and other professionals are facing a lot of difficulty in filing ITR and tax audit forms on time, so we request you to extend their deadline."
GCCI has given several reasons in its memorandum, due to which it is necessary to extend the deadline. Giving the reason for demanding further extension of the deadline for ITR filing, GCCI said that ITR forms and utilities have been released late, as these forms are issued in April itself, but this time there is a delay of three months in them. Forms from ITR-1 to ITR-4 have come in July. At the same time, ITR-5 came into effect on 8 August 2025. And ITR-6 and ITR-7 have not been issued yet.
Currently, the last date for tax audit has been fixed as 30 September 2025. GCCI has also demanded this because the chartered accountants conducting the audit have not yet obtained full access to all the necessary documents and forms.
Technical problems and internet problems
Among other reasons cited by GCCI are that the internet is slow in many areas. There are frequent changes on the portal. And chartered accountants are taking time to update the software. This is further delaying the work.
What is the impact on taxpayers?
ITR-5 is necessary for those who do business through firms, LLP, AOP, or BOI, and this form came only on August 8, and they have to file the return by September 15. This means they are getting less than a month, which is very less. Due to this, there is a lot of pressure on taxpayers and their advisors.
